Persuasion

Persuasion

The week coming is going to be a busy one so I aimed to get as much relaxing, reading and knitting done this weekend. I have now mastered the chunky needles and am working on a second chunky scarf in pink. When I’m not knitting or sleeping, I have been engrossed in reading Jane Austen’s Persuasion. I have always wanted to read all of her books, but never got around to. Recently I have joined the Jane Austen book club and that helped me pick up the book. I believe this is the first of her books that I have actually finished. I really enjoyed her writing, after the first few chapters of getting used to her style. If you want to know more, beware of spoilers!

Her writing is a mix of distance and passion. Sometimes her descriptions of what ideal relationships should be contrast to the warm feelings roused by the characters. I liked it that Anne wasn’t perfect. That one might think her plain. One might even call her average. Also, unlike the romances of nowadays, she was not arrogant as some women would be in her situation with Captain Wentworth. She was humble and accepting of what she saw as inevitable, but had a quiet confidence. No righteous indignation at all when it seemed his interest lay elsewhere.

My absolute favourite part of the story is in Chapter 11 when she talks to Captain Harville about the differences of love of a man and love of a woman. As Anne describes how women love; “All the privilege I claim for my own sex (it is not a very enviable one, you need not covet it) is that of loving longest, when existence or when hope is gone”. It expresses how she feels, how she loves and longs. In this one desperate sentence, she speaks raw of her heart in the presence of her want, who overhears this and is shaken.

Oh, you’ve written it beautifully. And you were the first one to finish reading it. I’m excited to finish the last few chapters to do the wrap up in August 31. =)

Thanks ^_^ But I think Gracey finished reading it first? I know I just started reading when she was already at the letter part of the story. It’s a very good story.

Wow, really, you’re so done? Am not yet, I don’t even think I can do it before the end of August, oh my, I am so well-beyond it.

You make lovely knittings. I hope I could have talent like yours…I envy those who know how to sew. I can only make cross-stitches…

Thanks for passing by my blog.
