Mansfield Park

My reflections of Mansfield Park are quite overdue. This was the October book for the Jane Austen Book Club. I think one of the reasons why I delayed writing my thoughts down was because I was a bit disappointed. I watched the drama series before I read the book and I did enjoy the series a lot more. A ridiculous amount more.
I think what got to me was that Fanny Price didn’t feel like a character at all when she was written down! She didn’t get through to me. Even now I am unsure to what her personality is. And Edmund just feels like a big eyed lap dog running after Mary Crawford and then Fanny. Both characters just didn’t seem to have any depth. As I read the book I was hoping for this to take a sudden change! But they weren’t extraordinary at all.
What I did enjoy was more the description of the setting and the other characters. I liked the rake Henry Crawford and his sister Mary. The bumbling Mr Rushworth even made me laugh! There was actual substance to what they were. They didn’t feel ghostlike, which is a characteristic I attribute to both Fanny and Edmund.
I think I will leave it at that. I’ve already finished the next book Lady Susan, which was written in an entirely different way. Will reflect on that soon ^_^

I agree with you, Fanny wasn’t really ‘felt’ in the book. I’d probably share the same disappointment if I’ve watched the film first. =)
I’m surprised with Lady Susan, a very short read and in form of letters! I still have 6 pages (from the ebook) to finish. I’m enjoying reading the epistles.

I am not done with the book yet as I have been busy with pending works after the vacation we had.
